In less than two weeks, South Dakota lawmakers be in Pierre for the 2019 legislative session. There’s a move to change the productivity model used for property taxes. South Dakota Agricultural Land Assessment Task Force member Jason Frerichs explains the new hybrid model proposed is called the most probable use system. “Using this system, we will not see huge shifts among agriculture land throughout the counties,” he says. “There’s a small decrease in total agricultural value when we go to the most probable use system, which will be a battle with urban folks. They are skeptical to changes on property tax assessments in agriculture land. We’re trying to closely mirror the property taxes on what the land can actually produce.”
