Because of the African Swine Fever outbreak in China’s swine herd, Global Commodity Analytics and Consulting President Mike Zuzolo thinks pork exports may overtake soybean exports to China. “It would make sense to me domestic Chinese hog producers would not repopulate herds decimated from African Swine Fever until they know African Swine Fever is gone,” says Zuzolo. “There could be a hole in demand for soy and made up outright by the hogs. I think that’s where Brazil is already seeing very strong export pickup from China.” The challenge, according to Zuzolo, is finding enough labor to meet the needs of U.S. packing plants.
