Craft and micro-brewed beer is changing barley production in the Northern Plains. North Dakota Barley Council President Doyle Lentz says craft, micro and even the large maltsters are moving to two-row barley. “That’s the trend. We’ve known it was coming, but we were hoping it wasn’t going to come quite this quick,” explains Lentz. “We’re going to try to adapt to that. It’s a whole new learning curve, completely different than six-row.” The focus for the barley industry during the Prairie Grains Conference was production research of two-row barley.
