With a delay in harvest, some farmers and ranchers are still weaning calves. Dr. Peggy Thompson, cattle professional services veterinarian with Boehringer Ingelheim, says calf health is key. From cow/calf to feedlot producers, a sound health program can benefit all chains of the system. “Try to prevent viruses that cause pneumonia and clostridial disease. Excess moisture encourages parasite transmission, so a good worming program is also important.” Thompson goes on to say cattle can easily hide physical symptoms of sickness. “That’s why preventative care is key. By the time symptoms start to appear, sometimes it can be too late.”
