One of the bigger short-term policy priorities as lawmakers return to the lame duck session of Congress will be the farm bill. “If outgoing House Speaker Paul Ryan puts the legislation on the board, it will make a difference,” says Informa Economics Senior Vice-President Jim Wiesemeyer. The question remains if a majority of Republicans will vote for a compromise farm bill, based on the requirements in the food stamp program. Wiesemeyer says the Freedom Caucus could cause some controversy when lawmakers return to Washington D.C. “It’s something to watch.”
