A coalition of environmental groups want the Environmental Protection Agency to change the way land-use is evaluated for the Renewable Fuel Standard. The 2007 law that includes the RFS has restrictions to prevent the loss of native grassland. A petition was signed by the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the Union of Concerned Scientists and others. The groups claim more than seven million acres of wildlife habitat has been converted to cropland since 2007. In a statement, the Renewable Fuels Association said the opposite is true; cropland in the U.S. continues to decline while grassland and forestland is expanding.
