The American Butter Institute is asking the Food and Drug Administration to take enforcement action against butter substitutes that have violated the agency’s food labeling requirements. According to federal statutes, butter is made exclusively from milk or cream. For decades, the term for vegetable spreads has been oleomargarine, but the American Butter Institute says companies are now using names like ‘vegan butter’ or ‘FabaButter.’ The label issue is being described as “false and misleading.”
