This past week was ugly for the hog market with triple-digit losses more common than not. Kerns and Associates economist Steve Meyer says the fundamentals in the hog trade are very negative with large hog numbers, poor packer margins and competition from other proteins. “Plus, we have all of the negatives with trade,” said Meyer. “The futures market is not quite as emotional as a teenager, but it is close. When that happens, there is over-reaction.”
