Speaking at a Politico event in Washington, D.C., FDA Administrator Scott Gottlieb said the agency will soon enforce regulations that define milk as an animal product and not a plant-based food. The National Milk Producers Federation has sought enforcement of current labeling standards for years and President and CEO Jim Mulhern said he is encouraged by Gottlieb’s comment. Beverages made from soybeans, almonds, rice and other plants are typically described as milk, which does not align with federal labeling standards.
