When the farm bill comes back to the floor, the language is not expected to change significantly. The recent farm bill debate included a surprising vote on sugar policy. “We had a huge vote on sugar,” explained Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson. “We turned over 30 members that were against us on sugar last time that switched their vote in favor of sugar this time.” Peterson credits the alliance between food stamps and farm programs. “I leveraged the goodwill I had with urban members because I called out the extreme stuff that was being done to the sugar program. I think this may be the last time they come after us with sugar.”
