Minnesota House Agriculture Policy Committee Chairman Paul Anderson says there are unknowns with the tax bill and how Governor Dayton will respond. “Now it’s time to negotiate with the governor and see what he will go for and what he needs to have in that bill.” At this point, the buffer property tax credit isn’t in the tax bill. There seems to be general support for paying farmers and ranchers for the land they give up for buffer strips, but the problem is funding. “At this late stage of the session, it’s hard to find the millions of dollars unencumbered. The other option is taking funding from the Clean Water Legacy account. The governor wants it to come from the general fund. That’s the hang-up right now.”
