Opening up Canadian markets in the North American Free Trade Agreement may not happen. That’s according to North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp. Heitkamp has mixed thoughts when it comes to the NAFTA renegotiation. “We do have dairy producers who want access to these markets and deserve access to these markets who should have a win out of this renegotiation, but we also want to get this done as soon as possible.” If an agreement on NAFTA 2.0 can be reached, Heitkamp says there is some uncertainty moving forward. “There are people who think it may need to come back to Congress. I’m not convinced that’s true. Again, this is uncharted territory. The challenge is whether there’s going to be a forced vote. There’s some argument there may be a forced vote, which is a withdrawal from NAFTA, with approval of a new agreement. I think that would be very problematic here.”
