Cattle producers in the Northern Plains have lost calves with the winter weather continuing into the 2018 calving season. North Dakota State University Extension Service livestock systems specialist Karl Hoppe says producers may be eligible for losses through the Livestock Indemnity Program.
“It applies to losses in excess of normal mortality under extreme situations; extreme cold, blizzard, winter storms,” says Hoppe. “Producers should report those to their local Farm Service Agency office. FSA can provide them with what information is needed to apply.”
Producers should keep detailed records of their operation and the losses to apply for LIP assistance. A notice of loss should also be filed with FSA within 30 days. Payments are equal to 75 percent of the market value of the livestock the day before they died.
