Hog production is increasing in South Dakota. The latest USDA report increased the South Dakota hog inventory by 14 percent. The breeding herd is 18 percent larger and the market hog estimate is up 14 percent. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says there is room to expand farms and produce more hogs. “You can raise pigs without being exposed the neighbors within a relatively close distance. Also, we have a favorable grain basis for the feeding aspect. We hope to add value to our corn by expanding the livestock industry.” New packing facilities will help boost demand. “We have two new packing plants going up in Iowa. There is some tremendous interest in the Midwest, and South Dakota hopes to be part of that in growing the industry.”
