Michigan Sugar Executive Vice President Jim Ruhlman says the official variety trials generate a substantial amount of data that is of interest to the sugar industry. “A large amount of research, both from an university and seed company standpoint, revolves around disease control and varieties that perform in different conditions,” says Ruhlman. The top-performing varieties featured in the trials move forward to commercial production for Michigan Sugar Company. “Research is done for a number of years on new seed varieties. Then, if the variety meets the criteria, those recommendations are made to the companies and they give us the seed.”
