South Dakota soybean leaders are focused on adding more value to the state’s crop through expanded domestic processing. Speaking at Dakotafest in Mitchell, South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council District One Director Bruce Haines said the new soybean crush plant near Mitchell is having an impact on the local soybean basis. “That’s a huge injection of value to the area around us,” he says. “And, you know, 34 to 36 million a crush is really, really good for the area.” Haines said South Dakota is now expected to crush more than half of its soybean crop in-state, creating additional demand for both soybeans and soybean meal. Haines said the soybean checkoff is also examining opportunities to add value through soybean oil, including additional uses for high-oleic soybeans.
