The Surface Transportation Board is expected to issue a key ruling on the proposed merger of Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway by May 30. The railroads have submitted a revised merger application. The original application was rejected with the STB seeking additional information about the implications for competition, labor and service. This step is needed for the proposal to move onto the next step in the review process. If approved, it would be the largest rail merger in U.S. history.
