Compared to one year ago, the number of workers hired by farmers nationwide is down 11 percent. In the Northern Plains, which includes North and South Dakota, the number of farm workers declined 17 percent. The Lake Region of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, there were 50,000 farm workers hired in April of this year. That’s down 3,000 from 2020. For the Northern Plains, farmers paid workers an average wage of $16.53 per hour. That number averaged $15.75 per hour in the Lake Region.
