University of Minnesota Extension and NDSU Extension’s annual Sugarbeet Research Reporting Session was held virtually this past week. Research on waterhemp control is a priority. Extension agronomist Tom Peters says new research has revealed some inaccurate previous waterhemp assumptions. “I’ve stated if you plant before April 20 you don’t necessarily need to use a pre-emergence herbicide. Based on our experience in 2020, we are recommending using a pre-emergence herbicide on all of our sugarbeet fields, especially in areas with identified waterhemp.” Season-long waterhemp control is another area of research. “I’ve made the statement repeatedly with our pre-program we want to buy time. These data question the accuracy of that statement. Are we buying time or do we get less than full control from reduced rates? We’ll repeat this experiment and we’ll see what happens.”
