In the current administration, key USDA agency leads are farmers. That includes Risk Management Agency Administrator Martin Barbre. The past four years helping other farmers navigate crop insurance is the opportunity of a lifetime for Barbre. “When I got to USDA, we were in the process of putting the farm production and conservation mission area together with Under Secretary Bill Northey. That’s been a great thing.” Barbre appreciates the collaboration between the RMA, Farm Service Agency and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. “Ag Secretary Perdue and President Trump put farmers in these positions. We were able to bring, I call it my producer perspective, to the table and I think it’s really helped. We can actually see how a policy would impact farmers. I would recommend whoever comes into these positions in the future be farmers.”
