The House Agriculture Committee passed the farm bill with a party line vote, but floor time has not been scheduled. National Association of Wheat Growers CEO Chandler Goule expects the Senate to release its bill in early May, followed quickly by the markup. “There are many moving parts right now. Can they get 218 votes? Hopefully it will be a more inclusive bill. That would help the Senate. I think we’ll see something soon.” If agriculture is hurt by a trade war, the Trump Administration says support will be made available to farmers. Goule believes there may be a better option. “If the USDA has enough money to put together programs to do a stop gap because of international trade markets we’re losing, why can’t we take that money and pump up PLC prices and work on ARC to give us a stronger farm bill and safety net? I think there are better uses where that money could support domestic farmers when we’re also in a tumultuous time of trade and don’t have solid trade agreements in place.”
