Weather has been a challenge for this year’s calving season. South Dakota State University Extension Cow/Calf Specialist Taylor Grussing says it’s always a good idea to supply extra bedding for both cows and calves. “Mud during these rain/snow events can be challenging. If we can keep them clean and warm, that’s better for herd health at the end of the day.” Grussing reminds producers to watch for scours and pneumonia in the calf crop. “That warm/cold fluctuation can induce pneumonia, so watch those older calves for respiratory symptoms. Manage that right away with antibiotics so it doesn’t spread.” Scours should be treated with fluids and electrolytes.
